Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

After playing this a number of times, it is not for me. It gets high marks for the theme and the awesome components, but the gameplay itself is the most random I have ever experienced outside of the kid board games I played growing up. If it was a guaranteed 30 minute game, that would be one thing, but there is way too much dice rolling to spend two hours (or longer!) just to fill up the cheese wheel right before the game ends. Ugh. I don't expect to ever play this again.

I love the theme of this game, but think some of the story elements could have been written/handled better. Very enjoyable and has a 'HeroQuest' feel to it. It is rated ages 7+, but I think that is more on theme. Younger kids will definitely enjoy it, but I think an adult or experienced child would need to be included in the mix because of the amount of rules in some portions of the game.

I wanted to love this so so much. I painted up all the wonderful models before I played it and got so very excited about getting it to the table. Yes it's adorable and very rich in backstory, but the gameplay is just not there. Very few tiles have enough obstacles that prevent you from reaching any enemy, so the entire game feels like throwing dice until you win, or until the game just fizzles out and you have to start again. Not enough decision making, not enough strategy. Roll the dice, hope for the best and enjoy the story.
