Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I have absolutely loved this game! Probably I even love it more, than Prague Caput Regni. The game mechanics are interesting and great, and the engine building and combo opportunities are just amazing. There are interesting decisions about the right timing for first building your engine, then deconstructing it. And the theme! Despite the fact it is an euro game, you can really feel the theme everywhere, with each rat, surviving citizens or quarantine mechanics! 10/10

The infamous game about a plague released when the world was still hindered by Covid. Grim as it might seem at first, it actually feels very constructive (or even a tad cathartic) fighting back against a plague by rescuing citizens, quarantining, fighting plague with fire, building structures on the estate, and eventually repopulating sections of the town. Granted there's no graphic detail of agonizing death or back-breaking work but hey it's just a board game. :) As for the actual gameplay there's a lot of leeway in deciding what avenues of scoring you want to focus on, and the game has a pretty good sense of progression arc, making beginning, middle, and end rounds all feel distinct. Despite the large and complicated-looking player boards most of focus is on the central town tiles, giving the game spatial considerations for planning and a decent amount of player interaction for an involved Euro game. Definitely one I'm excited to explore more.

Another excellent offering from Delicious Games that has players save citizens from Messina while fighting the Black Plague. The game combines worker placement with a nice spatial puzzle once your workers are on the board. The game feels very tight and is definitely one of those Euros where you cannot do everything you wish you could. The game will definitely reward players who pick a path and stick to it. Lots of different strategies possible, especially with the advanced boards, but it does need almost necessary to at least get a 4th lieutenant during the game. I don't think it quite reaches Suchy's best, but a very good Euro that I'm excited to play again.
