The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Nice to see the X-Men being included more with expansions like this. The included heroes are a natural combo.

Marvel Champions is a fantastic co-op card game set in the Marvel Universe. As a Living Card Game, it thrives on new releases: there are hero packs with new characters and player cards, and scenario packs with new villains and other challenges. This Campaign Box contains five new scenarios that can be played as standalone or linked as part of a campaign. Furthermore there are two new Heroes with their decks: Colossus and Shadowcat. A very good addition to the system!

This is a strong campaign box - but a slight step back from Sinister Motives. Colossus does some interesting things with the Tough mechanic (And when he works, it feels really good) but the protection cards he comes with don't really click with what he's doing and end up just feeling mostly like filler to you get to his actual cards. Shadowcat plays in a similar space to Vision (alternating between forms) and has some really thematic cards (Phase Strike in particular) but her upgrades were rarely relevant and I could never get the aggression cards packed with her to click with her phase changes - she just constantly seemed a bit out of sync. There's also the problem that these two have a team-up card, but Colossus is a neutral ally and Shadowcat is Colossus's signature ally - I keep thinking they'll learn that lesson and it keeps not happening since the Guardians of the Galaxy cycle. As a campaign it has the really interesting idea of introducing roles which let every hero flex their deck building slightly - that's awesome! - but the progression is far less interesting than the version in Sinister Motives. The Villains are a bit of a mixed bag - Sabretooth in particular is likely to draw hate due to his regeneration demanding a lot of focused damage to overcome in a very demoralizing mechanic. Sentinels and Master Mold play in a similar space to each other, but do feel unique, where the villain may not be the real threat. Sentinels also feels like a fairer version of the Collector - though it can also spiral suddenly. The Brotherhood is a standout - it feels a bit like Wrecking Crew done right - as Champions continues to figure out how to make multiple villains at once work right. And Magneto is the usual final villain - ready to kick your teeth in and flood you with extra encounter cards though in a way that feels slightly more fair than, say, Ronan and the need to keep pushing through the side schemes prevents the usual "burn it down" strat for an encounter like that.
