Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

It is hard to find anything original in Maracaibo. In fact it’s hard to find anything in the mechanics that Pfister himself hasn’t done before (even the multi-use cards were done in Port Royale or Oh My Goods) and the theme could really be anything. However, he is an excellent designer so he cobbles all these things together very coherently and I suppose what he is really doing is iterating his earlier designs to, in theory, improve upon them. Is Maracaibo better than the game that it most closely resembles, Great Western Trail? Possibly. Or possibly not. It will depend on your preferences in game play. GWT feels a lot more scripted with 3 main strategies. Maracaibo has more options and offers more flexibility. More of a ‘sandbox’ if you like – but that does not necessarily make it better.

The theme's pretty good. I enjoyed the game, but found on first play that it was impossible to be on top of everything. Lots of ways of scoring, though none of them are that complicated. The iconography on the cards is not always easy to follow if you are new to it. I definitely prefer it to Great Western Trail.

Heavy Euro game with great production. Lots of paths to go and timing to manage. Can definitely see potential, but I'd never buy this (too heavy). Happy to play more, though!
