Neat conceit to the setting. The best aspects of the game play are the spatial puzzle and the push your luck, both of which relate to the game's implementation of worker placement. The push your luck is damped a bit by the ability to card count, as the game is trying to lean into its puzzle. Marquis' narrative relies heavily on the labels for the missions (e.g., did you liberate, assassinate, etc.?). Despite the mission variety, the game gets repetitive quickly. The mission variety and difficulty levels don't meaningfully change up the feel of the game play nor do they provide memorable changes to the in-session narrative. The mission variety primarily mixes up the priorities of the puzzle, and the difficulty levels add more resource/efficiency pressure. Overall, Marquis is one for the occasional play. If heavily played, the conceit of the setting and some of its twists fade to the background and the conventional euro-style puzzle core is brought to the fore. That conventional euro puzzle core isn't particularly compelling to hold long term interest.

Just like Black Sonata, this little box is a gem. Superb production, and a great game that is yet difficult to beat.

A fantastic solo game! Simple rules, quick play, many decision points. I like how the difficulty is easily scaled. Once you know what you're doing, a game should only take about 15 min. Setup is rather quick - just a few minutes. I like this one a lot! So that's an 8. Why not higher? There are 14 missions/goals (2 different levels - 1 star and 2 stars) and you play 2. After 7 plays, you'll see repeats. There are 10 patrol cards. If I play this a lot, I'll start learning the number of times each location shows up so I can plan around the unseen draw deck. I wish there were more missions. I wish there were more patrol cards. I suppose I could fix the latter by doubling the number of patrol cards and sleeving them. Might try that. A great game overall! EDIT: I just want to note that the rules are a little imprecise or fuzzy in places. The rules are a little bare bones and the missions lead to a number of edge cases and related questions. For example, I'm still guessing that a mission telling me to "visit" a location does not mean that "visit" is a new, mission-specific action that must be taken at that location and I can do the location's action as normal.
