Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

❦ Solo Mode // Included in the Base Game ❦ Required Play Space // 8" x 6" ❦ Setup Time // 5 Minutes ❦ Play Time // 20 Minutes ✅ Finding a way for the character to escape on her own through the use of what’s at hand is a wonderful theme. ✅ There are a lot of different cards to discover with plenty of comical flavor text that brings the game to life. ✅ Each maiden features a different ability and set of starting cards to add a lot of variety against various captors. ✅ A set of rest cards at the bottom of the deck helps act as an easy timer and indication of when to re-shuffle. ✅ Gameplay can take place entirely in hand, but if using a surface, only a tiny area is ever needed to hold a few cards. ✅ Colorful artwork and card backgrounds add a bit of interest as the deck is cycled through over and over. ❌ The card quality is very disappointing, with cards that stick together and make shuffling an absolute nightmare. ❌ Many of the rules are written in a way as to not be very intuitive, and the rulebook feels extremely lengthy. ❌ Gameplay will often involve cycling through a lot of cards over and over just to find the next encounter. ❌ Collecting icons in a fan is very luck dependent, even with a lot of upgraded cards and treasures in the deck. $35 Sleeved in Swan Panasia sleeves, the only type that fits these cards. Played many times, in excellent condition due to the sleeves. Oh my god. I spent an entire Saturday getting nothing done except game after game of this little addiction. This goes everywhere with me, since it can be played in hand and has some pretty brilliant mechanics to make that work. Air travel will never be the same with this in my bag... Update 10/23/19: This still travels with me, but I seem to pull out Palm Island (similar mechanic) more often. I think escaping the tower makes me tense, whereas building up an island with various resources (in Palm Island) is more relaxing. Update 8/29/21: I ended up gifting this to a friend who's been enjoying in-hand games (Palm Island specifically) and wanted to try it. Since I'll almost always pick Palm Island over this one, it was time to pass it along to someone else to enjoy. Update: Didn't click with friend, so they gave it back.

I tried to play this after someone at my local game store recommended it, but I found it confusing and fiddly to set up. Then once it was set up, I found game play boring.
