Lorenzo il Magnifico: Houses of Renaissance
Expansion of:
Lorenzo il Magnifico
2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

An absolutely essential expansion, takes a very good game and makes it great. I know a few people who dismissed the game until they replayed it with the expansion and then bought/re-bought it afterwards. The expansion adds: 1) a new tower column with a large stack of new cards and the twist is that they are all 4 of the original types of cards mixed together, but of course they're all new (so lots of variety) and there are some real interesting ones in the deck, 2) some new faith punishments, 3) about double the number of leader cards, and 4) a handful of starting player powers- this is the most significant of all, as you start with a powerful family ability, some of these (as well as some of the new tower cards) allow for much, much more opportunity to play leader cards, which were extremely difficult to get played in the original version. This allows for a lot more variety, flexibility and fun.

*9* (Initial Plays) I’ve played this a few times now and I really like what it offers. There are many different modules to add that mostly affect the start game giving more variability and combos. A drawback to all of this is adding additional game length due to all the additions. I’m still engaged the entire time so don’t mind it to much. I definitely think the 5th player addition is a waste.

Solid expansion. I like the families a lot, but between it, the fifth tower, and the new token type I feel like it makes what was previously a very clean and tight game a bit bloated, even though the variety certainly injects some novelty. I kind of wish you could just run with the families + base game. But my feelings may change with more plays.
