Well constructed mechanic where you are literally (rocket) engine building, and that is deeply satisfying. Some elements of luck in the card draft mean you can't use deep strategy so the game remains light and fun. Great artwork as well and cute little cardboard rockets to build.

The strongest selling point of Lift Off is the retro comic style artwork. It helps evoking the atmosphere of the space race of the 60’s. The game itself is a drafting game with engine building and set collection elements. The draft is the main element and central decision point. The cards define the possible actions and benefits. The selection mechanism is similar to the one used in Inis. It can be brutal if the cards don’t offer the needed actions. Especially in the last round of each of the two ages this will be the case when the popular actions have been picked and the chaff remains. Due to the accelerating snowball, missing out on one more successful launch in the endgame can easily cost 10% of the total score. The strategy is defined by the initial goal cards. Tactically, sufficient income has to be secured while building up the required capacity and keeping costs under control. The focus is tactical. Lift Off is enjoyable but not outstanding. I like the drafting but I doubt that it will become a classic still being played in future years.

Tier 3- Very good but with a few minor flaws, still enjoyable for many (5-10) plays Quite enjoyed my first play. The game has depth and learnings to be had on building and timing of your engine. Love the theme and art direction however the game really needs a player aid / check list for the round structure and "launch phase"— a major oversight by the publisher. It could have even been printed on the board or the player boards! Lack of these just adds to the gameplay which seemed a tad long. However, it was faster as we got use to the turns and I can see the 2nd game moving along just fine. Looking forward to playing more as this has potential to move up a tier!
