Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Player elimination occurs in multiple-player games (>2) when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without the eliminated player.
Player Elimination
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

What keeps this game from being simply perfect for what it's supposed to do is how (relatively) poorly it scales to the lower player counts, with the (official) solo game being practically impossible to beat. Like most other BGGers who have posted about this in the forums, I play with several heroes, simulating multiple players. The upside here is that this is very easy to do. A very good (and beautifully produced!) game on the whole. Highly recommended.

It's just a matter of party synergies: as soon as the players understand how the game flow goes, how to exploit the mechanisms, and how to best use their perks, Last Bastion is «solved» and loses half its appeal as it turns into an exercise on mnemonics. The real challenge - and what the game is about, in the end - is understanding this final layer and discovering how the synergies work: this isn't evident at first, despite it being a dumbed down version of the way harder Ghost Stories, which had a slightly more original theme though than the generic high fantasy setting it now has. Last Bastion also comes with great components, some of which unnecessary: but they look cool on the board and improve the overall experience. They also contribute to make you feel like you're playing a heavier, more complex game than the light cooperative puzzle it definitely is. My rating is tentative as I plan on playing Last Bastion again so it might be revised.

Great games, fast pace, interesting mechanics, good design. Never played Ghost Stories, so I cannot compare both Games but Last Bastion is fun and soloable easily!
