Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Player elimination occurs in multiple-player games (>2) when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without the eliminated player.
Player Elimination
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Brilliant. Simple mechanics but at the same time very challenging. You're gonna feel extremely satisfied when you win for your first time! One of the best games of 2020.

The original implementation of this game, Ghost Stories, had a superior theme, was harder, and had 2 expansions to add a little content. Last Bastion has a more boring, generic fantasy theme and art style, but also more streamlined play, freedom of how to take turns, and freedom to choose combinations of characters, all of which also does make Last Bastion easier, which is probably great in the short term, but a downside in the long term for some players. Essentially, though, the gameplay is much the same, but in a package with fantastic production quality. The miniatures add a lot to the theme and feeling of uniqueness for each player/character, and the box organiser makes storing, setting up, and tearing down the game a breeze. [In hindsight, I hope any Ghost Stories hangers-on can recognise that it was the clunky move-then-act mechanic and limited combination choices that made Ghost Stories the nightmare to defeat that it always was. House-rule restrictions on character combinations, and a must-move-first rule, and Last Bastion would probably be about the same difficulty].

Really engaging game! I feel like it manages to do the thoughtful puzzly coop without the fiddliness. Game really does a good job of keeping you on task and pushing you to find a path out of it's procedurally generated mess. The dice are hilarious! Just the sheer awful odds of stamping out enemies level 2+ without their respective tokens that I find it funny that anyone (including myself lol) could expect to roll such hail marys. It's also easy to just pull out and play to! Only nits was that I wished such artistry was devoted to really blowing up the ghost stories theme of the original. Misty bamboo forests, rice paddies, or village fences to replace the castle walls for the map would've been sublime! Otherwise, I kind of feel like the character implementation was is a bit awkward, like they could've stayed to with the 4 figures and used power tiles instead of a big ol board to add to the table space. Really hope that they manage to keep this game in circulation as it's a real gem.
