Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Lanterns is one of my gateway games of choice. It is so simple that I can literally tell people at a game night to learn it from the instructions (or explain it to them in under 5 minutes while players in another game are taking their turn), and yet it is a deeply satisfying experience that teaches the mechanisms of tile-laying, set collection, and predicting other's actions (through the dedication system). There is a bit of a luck element in the tile draw that balances the game a bit for newer players, but largely it's a game of laying tiles to maximize returns for yourself while depriving competitors of cards they need and not opening up huge opportunities for someone who might be in possession of a lucky tile. New players tend to be charmed by Lanterns and seasoned players like it as a filler.

Wasn't interested in this game AT ALL, but turned out to fill a few minutes beautifully. I like the tiles a lot and it reminds me of dominoes a bit. Definitely captured the Chinese Lantern Festival idea. This won't ever be a top 5 game for me but it will be one I bring to the table or nightstand often. Must get the expansions!

一个无聊的小游戏,既没发现可以思考的地方也没有感到欢乐,3人局30分钟一局,玩了两局失去了兴趣
