This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.

I was surprised how much of hit this was for me. I love the tension owning shares of railroads bring and how you want to expand a railroad you own shares in without boosting the other shareholders too much.

Enjoyable, light cube rails game. There is luck in the draw for dividends, but good play should get its reward most of the time

This did not work for our group of three, which surprised me because I liked my one play of Ride the Rails. Moves were mainly obvious: add rails in companies in which you own shares. Auctions for shares liven things up a bit, but then it’s back to more laying rails, with occasional dividend payouts. Repeatedly working out the payments was a grind. There seemed to be so little to this game. One player remarked that it was probably designed back in the early days of modern board gaming and was surprised to find how relatively recent it was. After we finished I suggested we play again, not because I’d enjoyed it but because I was sure we must be missing something, but the other players were so underwhelmed that we decided to play something else. The art has been widely praised and while it is evocative, it is limited to the box cover, there is no other art. The board is functional blandness.
