Irish Gauge
60m - 60m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.

Initial impression: Looks to finally be a proper response to Wabash/Pampas, the best since at least Age of Scheme. Puts a healthy bit of randomness (what!? I just said that?) in the stead of Preussische/German Rails. Winsome has previously done much with the "you can take dividends whenever you would like although you are least likely to gain by it", but this is the best of that lot I've seen. Game could ultimately be unfortunately flat, hence the tepid 8 rating...could swing down to an uninspired-to-play-again 6 or upwards of a 9ish. Update: Woah, that randomness! Losing points, unlikely to table again soon.

I really fell in love with Irish Gauge during my first ten plays. There's a metagame here of alliances and trust that will only develop after several plays. That said, the 45-60 minute run time and the low-hanging options for strategy mean that this one will be fun even with newbies...or so I thought. The fact that this isn't the case is disappointing, because there's so much I enjoy about this game. I love the interplay of the call for dividends mixed with the special interests. The random cube draw on the dividend payout is phenomenal, and brings lots of tension. The timing of whether to call for dividends or let your similarly desperate neighbor do them same is a great tense choice. So is the stock mechanic -- will you overbuy a stock that you desperately need? Both money and stocks are points at the end of the game, so it's all a balancing act. Unfortunately, Irish Gauge has a few issues. New players will struggle to wrap their heads around the game, and it's dependent on a player-based balancing so one person who doesn't 'get' it will skew the table accordingly. Irish Gauge is still a great intro to train games, and it's probably as far as I'll ever dip my toe into the waters, for that matter. This is absolutely the game I wanted [thing=75358]Paris Connection[/thing] to be.

Didn't feel like decisions were important enough and that the game will play out much differently each time. Sold to someone right afterwords who enjoyed the game.
