This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
In-game money is bet on different commodities in hope that that particular commodity will become the most valuable as the game progresses. Often the values of the commodities are continually changing throughout the game, and the players buy and sell the commodities to make money off of their investment.
Commodity Speculation
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Oh... I like where this is headed. Only a couple of games in so far, I'll update after a proper vetting. Includes: [thing=218703][/thing] [thing=239107][/thing] [thing=234680][/thing] [thing=234679][/thing] [thing=218702][/thing] Model Ships UPDATE: Bumped to a 9. I am really digging this game. The GtR lineage is obvious, but Import/Export is definitely it's own animal. As noted elsewhere, there is room for improvement as there are a few rough edges and maybe some unintended synergies between cards. Really, all that means is that I am eagerly looking forward to seeing what the updated / cleaned up / new version looks like. (Which I believe is soon? Anticipated July '19 Kickstarter. And I'm in as soon as it launches.) 2ND UPDATE: In and looking forward to it!

Played Andy R's copy 4 handed - it's a re-imagined Glory to Rome and I struggled to play properly but fluked a spawny win by having a 1 in 100 guess on what next card turned would be - Icelandic water will live long in the collective memory!

[i]OK - will play if in the mood.[/i] Not sure how I feel about the game. It one hand, it's an interesting concept of running a shipping business of loading exports and importing things. Players need to be aware of what's loaded on their ships, what's being imported and time all of that to prevent stalling out the export side. The multi-use cards are a bit to grok at first and players who have played another game of similar nature will pick it up quicker than new players. On the flip side, each contact is unique making it hard to really pick a good set of abilities to chase without knowing the whole deck. The rule book is well laid out but left a lot of questions. Those are answered in various BGG posts but they come up frequently enough that some revised text on the cards and rule book would help.
