Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

I quite enjoyed the puzzle-ish element of Honshu, Hokkaido's predecessor, while finding that its "trick-taking" method for distributing cards did not work very well. Hokkaido replaces tricks with drafting. This speeds the flow of the game, but it does remove any semblance of player interaction. Players in Hokkaido will sit with eyes fixed on their own tableau or with fingers tapping the table, waiting for the player with AP to pass on those damned cards. What remains is a puzzle and one that's significantly tougher than Honshu's thanks to mountains that cannot be covered and which must form a single range no more than one square wide. As with Honshu, I overcame my normal distaste for puzzles to quite enjoy building a landscape. Hokkaido's artwork features plenty of white and the bleached out look of more snow on the way. While that's appropriate to Japan's mountainous northern island, I do find Honshu's warmer colurs more appealing. Card quality is decent.

Only 1 play so far. Rules could be clearer and suffers from AP for sure. An OK game; very kingdomino-like feel, but not as fun.
