Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Look to get into interested hands/right fit. Indication to trade is willingness to let go of from collection.
Big B
Interesting little territory control game. Despite the Civ-like appearance it's actually fairly light and easy to pick up. Comparable to Smallworld with some dice and modifiers in place of that game's deterministic elements. Not a bad game to pull out when wanting something with a historical flavor but still approachable for more casual crowds (though it can be fairly lengthy with 4+ players).
Bbernard
This version is by far the best iteration of this title. The old AH version is quite good too, but takes a good 5-6 hours to play. Thn Hasbro version IMO is not so good because the board gets too crowded and the minis can be confusing. “A Brief History of the World” is a minor evolutionary step and too fiddly the way the pawns are placed and now seems just like a minor evolutionary step on the way to this penultimate edition. It is elegant and captures the essence of the original in 2.5-3 hours. A particularly clever rule addition is that when your score marker would end on the same space as another player you can either move ahead one space, or stay behind one space, givi you a better selection of empires in the next epoch.
