Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

I only played the original version of HotW once, enjoyed it quite a bit, but knew that I would probably never pull it out again due to the 5/6 hour timeframe of the game. I think this new edition from Z-Man works very well. It gives all the impact and flavour of the original edition without sacrificing game play. I think it became a more strategic game with the way Event and Empire cards are distributed, although this certainly slows down the game considerably (though not as much as having a 6th and 7th additional epoch!) The board is excellent and the components are generally fine, though clearly some money-saving was done with cardboard forts. The catapult is a little unnecessary. And the "globe on a pedestal" doesn't exactly deepen the theme, but it's probably better than the plastic component overload of the AH edition and they are well made regardless. Overall, HotW is a really fine game and while it does feel a bit aged (all things considered: it is over 25 years old!) but it manages to reinvent itself enough to feel fresh. I'm glad to have upgraded to this edition.

Small World simply does this genre better, not a bad game but one that I can't see myself wanting to play again any time soon. Main problems are that the downtime can be quite extensive, and the scoring system favours the starting player a little too much, it seems.
