I was really hoping a revamped edition of this game would take it to the finish line, as I've always loved the main idea of History of the World, and also like A Brief History of the World. However, all of the things I liked about the game are all still there, and minorly improved which is great, but the glaring problems are still present, which was very disappointing. The big, huge problem with this game is simply down time. Player turns can be lengthy, and the bummer is that the game is more fun with more players to compete against, but down time gets crazier and crazier with more players as well. Even with 4 players, it's possible to go a full half hour, or even more, between turns. I'm also not a huge fan of turn order playing such a huge role. Particularly in the last round, setting yourself up to choose early in order to get a civ that acts first is huge. In close games, it gets pretty ridiculously and off-puttingly game-y if you're counting points in order to stay in last place, purposely not scoring points just so you can choose first in the last round. Overall, I still like the core game idea, but this still isn't an edition that takes that idea and gets it to the finish line. Honestly, Small World is probably that game, with the rising and falling of empires done in a way that is more fun and densely packed with game action. The age of the design, even though the design is close to being really good, still shows. I still like the game alright due to really liking the core idea and mechanisms, but its issues will keep it from being any more than a once-every-couple-of-years play.

It is an ok game if been judged standalone however as it is a remake, there is simply no way to not compare it to any of the preceding games. It has some nice touch but very lacking in both strategy (less empires, less game turns and draw new event cards every turn instead of from beginning) and tactic (the reduction of map size is overdone). I still prefer the AH 1993 version. Best of them all.
