Heir to the Pharaoh
45m - 60m
2 - 2 Players
Ages 10+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

The original design, called Ziggurat, was a top-ten finalist at the annual Hippodice Board Game Design Competition in Bochum, Germany, in 2005 (along with Bridge Troll the same year). See: http://www.alfseegert.com/my-hippodice-game-design-competition-winners-and-finalists.html If you are looking for a thoughtful two-player game that is well-designed, and especially if you enjoy auctions and bidding, this is definitely something that fits the bill. It integrates a number of common mechanisms in a very smooth way, that produces a fresh overall design. The result is something that is greater than the sum of its parts, without feeling convoluted. It's not that difficult to learn, and yet it demands careful and satisfying decision making in order to play well. Return visits will reveal increasing amounts of depth and decisions, and prove rewarding and enjoyable. Alf Seegert has produced some lighter games over the years, but with Heir of the Pharaoh he has produced a very thoughtful and clever design that is rightly regarded as an overlooked gem. I quite enjoyed my one play of this fun little two player game. The components are good and the theme is rather fun. The key aspect of the game is bidding for the Favour of the Gods cards. These cards give the player that wins the bid the opportunity to utilise one of the variety of options to score points. After one play I am not unconvinced that there are too many ways to score (a points salad so to speak); this was true in my only game where I found myself losing the majority of the auctions but winning the game despite having significantly fewer scoring options. Then again, my opponent focused on placing and claiming the monuments on the board so perhaps that's not the optimal strategy. Anyway, all good fun and one I'd play again but would be unlikely to purchase.

Heir to the Pharaoh is my attempt to capture an "epic" feeling in an intense 2-player-only game that plays in under an hour. It was a finalist in the Hippodice game design competition in Germany as "Ziggurat." VARIANT: There is a variant I used in testing that never made it to print, unfortunately. For a shorter game, use a marker to block out the Sun opposite to the starting space of the Sun Marker. Skip that round when playing. It makes the game a fair bit shorter. If you play using this variant, let me know how it goes!
