Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Hand card management, engine building mid-weight euro game by Andreas Steding (Hansa Teutonica). Players play a card on one of 7 spots on the main board. The player takes the card that already is there. Otherwise the player may spend two servant tokens. Depending on the destiny dice and the picked up card's number, the player get additional servants. What makes it special? * Worker placement with multi-used cards (replace a card with another card on the main board) Pros: + Artwork (clear, detailed, colorful) + Theme (China, Medieval, gift-giving/bribery, nice card integration, but still abstract) + Components (custom wooden pieces and meeples) + Puzzly hand management and multi-used cards (kind of workers, plus ability, plus number). Which card to replace? Which card to make available for other players? + Destiny dice provide boni if players pick the right cards + Dynamic board where cards are exchanged all the time by the players + Race for emperor track (palace) + Road track for point to point movement to collect bonus tokens (different distribution, replayability) + Ship track to collect bonus tokens but players have to look out for skip over other players (competition), different order each game (replayability) + Intrigue track used for tie-breaker + Objectives tiles (decrees) for end game scoring (race for the tiles), different each game (replayability, variability) + Player board that is used for upgrades (engine building) + Great Wall for area control (all or nothing, no second place but only cubes of first player are removed) + Variability / a lot of options + Scales well with all player counts (however, better with 3+ players) + Good player aid / iconography Neutrals: # Seems a bit sandboxie # Some player interaction: especially in lower player counts because you know the cards of your opponent, race for the objectives tiles (decrees) # Tight game: 4 turns with playing only 4 cards # Memory element: other players hand # Rather abstract # Language independent # Solo mode # The main board consist of seven disjointed "mini-games" (except for the wall and tie-breaker track)

Very good medium eurogame for two players. We always play with a couple of modules from the expansion.

Played this at 4p and 5p, and found it a bit too chaotic and felt I had little control over what actions I could take. The bribery card mechanic is thematic and unique, but ultimately leads to reactionary gameplay, where forming any long term plan seems pointless. I still want to try this at lower player counts, where the board state does not change so much between turns.
