Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Games that use the Memory mechanic require players to recall previous game events or information in order to reach an objective.
Memory
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

I don't get to play with much of this often, as I'm usually teaching new players. I'm thinking of maybe adding the new pieces in on race 3? Anyway, using the alternate ships is as fun of a handicap as the Rough Roads. I've never tried the Evil Machinations. I certainly wish it was easier to separate the pieces by expansion. They could probably have used a different back - Innovation gets away with it.

Because apparently the base game wasn't cruel enough. New alien is pretty neat with its roles. Rough Roads cards are horribly sadistic.

Galaxy Trucker is probably one of the funniest game ever made, but it has just one small flaw: after many plays, players learn how to build sturdy reliable ships... So this first big expansion is a very welcome addition, because it significantly boosts the difficulty! There are many different modules: a fifth player, new ship tiles, new adventure cards, new types of cards (evil machinations and rough road)... A great, perfect addition to a wonderful game!
