The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Card-driven siege game for 2 players by Vangelis Bagiartakis (Among the Stars, Fields of Green, Dice City)
salonikios
Very good assymetrical game, played it about ten times with both Turks and Greeks and every time you didn't know what to find in your way to victory!!

I own the KS edition. Some counters do not fit well on the mapboard and the mapboard is toooo dark! When playing a siege game, one needs vivid colors to distinguish boundaries and connections like on the islands. The rules for the most part are clear enough but leave ambiguities on sectors such as the Lagoon. The card driven mechanic is quite intriguing and play is tense. The Imperial player is trying to subdue a fortified town in western Greece during the Ottoman occupation. It is a light wargame mostly driven by cards, giving each player opportunities and chances to attain their goal. For the Imperial player to breach walls and enter the city and for the Insurgents to withstand the foe, call for help and support from nearby areas to prolong their cause. Game play is balanced and flows fast. The text on the cards add flavor, details and knowledge on a siege not very well known. A nice approach to siege warfare.
