This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.

Initial Impression: I was honestly surprised by this game as the theme didn't hold much interest for me before playing it. However, it's an engaging cooperative game with just enough moving parts to be interesting without overwhelming. Manipulating the slave catchers in order to move slaves safely past them is a puzzle, as is generating money through population of the seperate areas of the map. This game plays well solo. Similar to many wargames, playing this game will give you more than a passing knowledge of the conditions and considerations involved in the decision-making process this game's situation models.

Freedom is a pretty conventional puzzle. It's really a game about money; how to maintain a flow of income and how to divide it between purchasing support for the abolitionist cause and moving escaped slaves. Add point to point movement of slaves from the southern plantations to Canada, with actual escape balanced against fund raising and the need to free up spaces in the plantations. This is made more interesting by a game of dodge with a set of slave catchers who react to your moves. The draw of abolitionist cards and some random movement of slave catchers add a degree of variation, though not quite enough, in my view. Freedom is a well designed game. It plays very smoothly, generates good tension, and there isn't an ounce of fat. It's a tough puzzle to solve. Fidelity to its unusual theme is also good; I find myself fretting over the fate of every one of my little wooden cubes. Here is another comprehensive and readable set of rules from Academy Games. The game is good looking, the artwork nicely evocative of the era. However, there are some rough edges to a production that is mostly on a par with eurogames.

I bought this game to play solo. It works really well. Like Pandemic Legacy and Scythe, though, I struggle to separate the game from the theme. I've played it a few times with others and wanted to strangle them when they casually referred to the loss of a brown cube (aka, a slave) as being not a big deal. So this game has firmly cemented itself as a solo-only game for me. And I thoroughly enjoy it that way.
