Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Impressive adventure/RPG. Good choose your own adventure storybook to follow with a lot of replayability. Similar to Runebound where if you die, you can have options to continue (ghost mode). Fighting is limited but interesting. Campaigns are 2-3 hours each realistically and game will need to be left set-up.

Nice! Finally a coop-game that blends well aspects of roleplaying and adventure gaming. Like the gothic/horror theme and the artwork and minis match perfectly with it. The story is good and stays away from being jammed with cliches. No orks and trolls here. Though it s a tactical game it has a nice overhead with the world map. Lots of other things can happen on or off-road and in the cities as well. It is not just about fighting monsters. No long setup. Unlike others complained in the comments I feel it is not unbalanced, though with to players you have to choose carfully which characters work together best. Some components are poorly designed, f.ex. the life point trackers that come with the retail edition suck. The rulebook is not well organized and should have an editor working on a revised edition. And- no coins! Players have to note your money all the time. I took the coins from scythe. Beside that I love it. On of my favorite games at all.

Solo playing 3 characters....A sick dice chucker that makes me happy. Not perfect, but the jump from world map to adventure(tactical) maps is quick. I don't have to spend a lot of time searching for, odd shaped tiles to build the map like in Sword & Sorcery. I also really enjoy the character customization options (items, abilities, companions, lore upgrades, prayers, rituals, and more).
