Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

A plane and a subway station... Both come with difficult terrain that costs extra AP to cross and both are very thematic. I have the Kickstarter Edition, so I also have a cool new role card and an extra Attic/Basement board for even more fun.

Flashpoint is my favourite co-op game. Easy to learn because everybody has some idea of what firefighters do, so the game is rarely dominated by the experienced player telling everyone else the best moves to win. So, we really get into the roles - I am a firefighter and I don't want anyone to die, included myself! However, like many co-op games where the difficulty level is selected at the start, there is a competition between the players and the person deciding the difficulty level; can the players perform better than expected? If the selecting player gets it wrong consistently, either too easy or too hard, no-one has a good time. This expansion adds a subway fire and an aeroplane explosion.
