Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Light, classic German style game that's very quick and offers just enough interesting decisions to be interesting. For now, I've had a bad first impression of the new rules, so I'm sticking to the classic rules. The new rules seem to offer more strategic depth as they allow you to draft a tile in the exploration phase, but the actual choices aren't that much more than just pulling a tile from the bag (because the placement rules are very restrictive). The downside is that they add a lot of overhead and frustration to the game as they seduce you into thinking there are a lot more choices than there actually are. I haven't played with more than 2 yet, but am looking forward to trying with 3 (but then, should I stick to the classic rules?). I'm also looking forward to exploring the runes. I've only played the Strength rune so far, and that seemed interesting, but didn't end up mattering that much in that one play. Some of the runes seem interesting though! Because of the game's simplicity, and the almost cooperative nature of the exploration phase, I'm hoping to be able to play this with my son in a year or two.

A splash of Carcassonne, a dose of Through the Desert, and some concepts from Go. All the constituent parts are superior to what becomes of this mixture. Great Plains is actually a bit better at 2P. The runes added in this edition do add some flavor but the core is just a bit too bland and it never escapes the shadow of better games.

Just one of those games that everyone likes. Quick and tense. Would only turn down if I had a real desire to play something heavier.
