Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

5 plays / 4,5,6 players (1st edition & 2nd edition) LIKE: Hard decisions to use which cards where. Cool theme, somewhat quick game. The card mutations are a great mechanism. DISLIKE: The game is based heavily on luck of the draw, and a couple card combos seem very powerful. The late game is terrible: leaders will snowball and those lagging behind get trounced. Carnivores are more difficult than herbivores to maintain. Herbivores can easily circumvent them. OVERALL: Early game is fun, but fall behind and there's little chance for catching up. In one game, my carnivore ate the weakest player, but couldn't catch the strongest player. It's the late game that drags. Downrated after several plays.

A bit long for a filler, but honestly there isn't much depth to this version. You need some expansions there to get a real game going.

Kickstarted the second edition. Played several times so far, but then found out that the last two times, I just added all the KS promo cards to the deck without taking out any. Which, as described in the forums, changes the game a lot in weird ways and also increases the length significantly.
