It's okay. A bit too much going on to be a gateway game, but not enough strategy to satisfy most gamers. Not really sure where it fits in a game collection.

This is a tough one. We initially played the the beginner version of the game hated it for many reasons. The full version was so much better. However it still has some issues for 2 player. With being limited to 2 traits and removing 40 cards from the deck, it's possible to build species with two defensive traits that are unbeatable. Specifically the warning call that adds ambush and the other species having carnivore defense means the other players can't directly attack because one of their two traits is a carnivore and only 1 of the 2 required. So you say ok, don't attack those two species first since you cant, attack the warning call one first to knock it out. However that species could also have the +4 defense with the warning call so the only way to take it out is to have the pack hunting card to your carnivore and level it up. How many turns will it take to beef up your carnifore? Is the pack hunting card even in the deck and wasn't discarded? Meanwhile the Watering hole engine is pumping out points while the carnivore tried to get lucky. The second issue is the game lasts too long because it takes awhile to cycle through all those cards. You can't remove cards for reasons already mentioned. I'll have to look or make a variant as some combos are just broken. Aside from that I love the theme. EDIT: Played this again. Definitely had a better experience but oceans blows this out of the water. This one is so steppy in comparison. You also end up with way to many cards and a runaway leader problem. There is minimal you can do without luck to counter certain strategies. So much focus is on attacking and defense that there isn’t much you can do in the game. I just didn’t enjoyed it compared to oceans that it probably won’t stay long. You are also so dependent on the skill level of your opponents to stop you and that’s why it’s difficult to play with a group because there is no handicap. In two player you are limited to 2 traits as we found that to work better than 3 but there’s no way to attack some creatures and it’s so easy to have enough food while dropping 7-9 each round. Maybe you lose a few population but I ended up having like 6-7 species because you can lay down as many cards as you have in your hand. Just doesn’t scale well.

Evolution is a gorgeous game about evolving your dinosaurs, breeding new dinosaurs, and trying to make sure they all stay alive and fed in order to out compete other species. While the components are nice and the mechanics relatively intuitive, I found I and my group did not like the game that much. It felt a little too simple and like there wasn't enough going on in the game in terms of cards and options. the designer has kickstarted another edition with a flight expansion so maybe the game is better now but I am probably not going to buy a second copy to find out.
