Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

Some of the very best art in any game I've seen. Is it a good thing that that is the first thing I think of? Maybe not, but hot damn it looks good. To be fair, this game does extremely well the exact thing I look for in board games, which is representing thematic elements within a mechanical system. Heavy fur that protects you from cold weather but dooms you in the heat? Yes please. Pack hunting that lets you add your population to your body size to attack bigger species? I love it. Fat tissue that lets your species overeat and dig into the supply when food runs out? Oh baby. Card powers like that added to the stunningly colorful table presence might inflate my rating a point or two from where it ought to be, but hey, its my rating. I do have a couple small complaints with the rules as written that had easy fixes: While I understand what I am supposed to be looking for on my opponents' turns (body size, primarily) I often choose to just have everyone play simultaneously as recommended for the 6 player game. The climate tracker doesn't move quite enough in the two player game, so we've house-ruled that it can move up to two spaces per round if the symbols are that much in one direction.

I don't think I'd play Evolution without Climate anymore. Makes the game much better and adds a whole lot of variation.

I had previously played Evolution and backed the Climate edition. The new Climate rules make the game punishing I think in a very good way. The food pool is now more challenging to get what you need. New traits help you deal with the ever changing cold or heat, so you have to be willing to let species go and start in a new direction. As always, carnivores feel harsh and make the game less than familiy friendly. But for gamers who like to push each other around, this one is quite good.
