Demoed this at Essen in 2017. Thought it was fantastic then and game has even exceeded those expectations.

A relatively simple engine + tableau builder / map control combo. Nice Age of Sail/Exploration theme that is very well delivered by the game. Strongest aspect of this game, especially considering the short length, is the game arc - the last 3 turns are almost like playing a totally different game, as you flood the map with discs and fight your opponents for control of links. The first few two turns can be a bit samey/boring - but they go by very quickly, as you don't have much to do. The exploit 'expansion' is mandatory in our experience - without it, the game can feel very flat/shallow. The exploits add some extra depth + replayability and help to mix things up beyond the variable token placement at the start of the game. The rulebook is clear, well-written, and concise. It makes the game very easy to learn/teach. The exploit cards do a good job of explaining themselves as well, outside of one or two edge cases. Anyone can learn to play this game in ten-fifteen minutes. The physical production (retail copy - I've never seen the KS version in person) is pretty solid for the $60ish I believe it retailed for - there's nothing standout, but nothing is lacking either. I could easily see a playgroup getting tired of this fairly quickly, especially if they are not 'mean'/into the military action the game provides. At its best, your disks should constantly be under threat of attack - we found that when players were more interested in just turtling and filling up the map, the game was quite a bit more boring. Would only suggest this game with aggressive players - if you just want to engine build, there are better games for that out there. Four or five are the best player counts - more players means more of the tracks will get filled/areas opened + exploits unlocked more quickly. The map is double sided to scale for the smaller player counts - but at 3 the game still didn't feel as tense/cut-throat as it does at 4 or 5. Thanks to the ability to do most of the bookkeeping simultaneously, extra players also doesn't stretch the game length too much, which is an added bonus.
