Description from the publisher:
The Ancient Uprising has been put down, and a fragile peace again holds in the galaxy…but suddenly, everything changes. Several new factions rise to disturb the status quo. The Unity nanomachines bend energy and matter to their will. The Shaper ships tear the spacetime fabric apart, while insignificant Octantis factions take a developmental leap after leap forward. It almost seems like the base laws of the universe no longer apply.
Eclipse: Shadow of the Rift introduces several new mechanisms to Eclipse, including Time Distortion, Evolution and Anomalies, as well as several new Rare Technologies, Developments and Discoveries. It includes two new player boards with three new different alien species from which to choose. Due to its modular design, you can use all of these additions or just some of them in any game of Eclipse according to your preferences and play style. The expansion does not require the Rise of the Ancients expansion, but is fully compatible with it.
As the shadows unfold from the rifts of spacetime, can your civilization stand unbroken?

More of the same and new stuff! I've only played it a few times as of now, but I suppose I can safely say that it's no Rise of the Ancients 2.0 - where RotA was the upgrade that fixed the few flaws of Eclipse and made it more interesting, SotR seems to be a layer of butter over the game's cake; delicious, but not strictly necessary and even too much for some. The new races are pretty complex (which is a good thing IMO) and who doesn't like more tiles, techs and developments? As said, mostly more of the same and not the auto-include-everything that RotA was. My one major complaint after just one game is that the Rift Turrent is absolutely ridiculous. One player had Interceptors with them and reinforced hulls... and a few of them pretty much annihilated well-outfitted armies that cost ten times more material... But I can just take these out. Overall, SotR is a nice package full of new things to play with, and while it doesn't expand Eclipse in a way that it feels new, it doesn't have to. At the end of the day I want to have a go with all new races and play the game a few times before I can really comment on- and rate it.

Very intriguing additions. Rated a little lower due to increased fiddliness compared to previous expansion. Still excellent.
