Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing

Simplistic Hack and Slash dungeoncrawler. No sense of adventure, just endless fighting. You don't get to search a room for hidden doors or treasure. What way you go in the dungeon matters little, as the scenario specific tile is drawn according to it's placement in the stack - not by your choices. Too many choices are made by the game, not the players.

Aaron's game. We have not played with regular rules yet. My kids just like to set all the tiles and monsters up, then run through with simplified rules and no events.

See my comments for Castle Ravenloft. Wrath is basically the same game with some new tweaks, but not enough where I'm going to pick one over the other. They're compatible with one another for home brews. Basically it comes down to preference and which theme you like better—the dungeon crawl under the mighty castle facing undead hordes, or the classic fantasy adventure of going after the big bad dragon. Both are great games. The "D&D Adventure System" was expanded nicely with this release.
