Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

+ Incredible depth of decision space delivered in such a simple-to-teach package; You really get the feeling that you're playing with your opponent as much as you're playing with your own deck. - I wish that they would have implemented "half-decks" like Tyrants of the Underdark for their market row so that you could play with the "treachery" half-deck or the "technology" half-deck or the "close-quarters" half-deck... etc. etc.

Quite interesting blend of deck-building, worker placement and VP race. The overall play reminds me of Lords of Waterdeep, not sure why.

A really well-implemented worker placement, deck builder with a sci-fi theme. Fun group and solo play. What's not to like?
