Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Rise of Ix does a lot of great things for Dune Imperium: it makes the early game less scripted and more open, it gives players more options throughout the whole game, it fixes a few of the problems of the base game. I would say it is the ideal expansion, and it shows the degree of understanding the designer has for his game, and the commitment to make it better.

If the original game is not bad enough. Add this expansion to divide and dilute the deck and actions more. Thus creating a ridiculous theme of Dune with what a basic and wide ride of worker placement game and call it an award winning game. Sigh. A worker placement game. Nothing to do with Dune. No flavour what so ever. That’s why it’s still a 5. Would be worse if it did not even have the basics.
