Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

The burdens of sorting through this mess of a rulebook put such a drag on the gameplay that I don't want to revisit the game, a 7th time (really each "game" is 3 maps of gameplay). Sad part, I enjoyed the game, AFTER fighting through the rulebook for gaps in explanations but not enough to return.

Full of tense timing decisions (how many more turns do I have until somebody defeats their third boss) and efficiency challenges for dice and mana use, plus a healthy dose of (positive and negative) player interaction in the dice selection process. Extra credit for the slow play option (one map per game session allows time to absorb the theme, read side quest stories in character, etc.) transforming Drawn to Adventure into a three-play mini campaign. Rulebook criticism *is* warranted, as some iconography is left unexplained, and numerous fringe situations that require interpretation exist, *but* designer/publisher support on BGG has been exemplary in resolving these...and in most cases, the intuitive answer is the right one. Overall, an underrated gem that deserves a mention in the same conversation as Cartographers and Merchants of Magick.

the core conceit of an epic roll&wright that you can play over 3 separate sessions, leveling up all the way, is very cool, and the gameplay is nice, but not quite as combo-tastic as we're used to in R&Ws
