Dominant Species: The Card Game
60m - 60m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 13+
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Closer to Rio Grande Games's Taj Mahal than the D.S. board game, and that is good because I like Taj and hated the board game.

Ok, it's not anywhere near DS the boardgame. Let's get over it. As a game itself, it's a pretty decent filler that takes about 45 mins for 3 players. In some way, at least this is not another poker hand set creating victory point collection game. It felt more like a push your luck and dare your opponent game that has some slight tactical twist, in a sense that you can get rid of certain cards and no gamer can just keep adding and adding without care or no tomorrow kind of extend. There is a point that I did not like about the game is the notion of playing everything in your hand on the last turn, be it useful or not. The player that draws more cards in the survival track will have the upper hand. The randomness of the draw could possibly make this gap between players even wider. For this point alone, I have drop the rating by a notch.

Just purchased and starting playing this recently. The game mechanics are actually fairly interesting and fun so far. However, the certain action/event cards are overpowering and this can lead to some annoying imbalances in play (ie Solar Flare in the final round is devastating).
