Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Ultimately decided not to get primarily b/c it is a non-solo / competitive based game. Same company made Chronicles of Crime (which I haven't played but suspect is 4/5), and Destinies (which I gave a 7.25) - neither of which was compelling enough for me to get at this time.

That being said, I like it so far. Other recent comparisons are Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West, My City, and maybe tile/city builders like Cascadia, Meadow, and Keyflower? There are a lot out there, and this one is a nice addition. The basic restriction of using dice and math to draft is great. Easy enough that we are playing it with our 7 and 11 year olds, but enough decision space that I don't feel like the game is playing me. There is also a certain joy attached to deciding which gods/objectives you want to support instead of randomly being handed objectives at the beginning of the game. I will probably always be a sucker for legacy games. The sense of discovery, mystery, and permanency is unparalleled. The fact you don't have to learn a new ruleset every time you play appeals to my wife, but the changes and additions appeals to me, who often treats board games like a buffet and samples almost everything. It feels like you will know if you like this game or not going in, so I'd say to trust your gut. It's early still and you're still seeing the now predictable campaign backer anger for delays in time and expectations, but I imagine scoring will even out over time.

Game is ok, but not enough changes between scenarios. App works ok. Support and clarifications here on BGG is lacking. Stickers on dice do not stick properly. If you make a game with a lot of stickers, then you have to make sure they work flawlessly. Disappointing.
