Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

The game feels fast-paced and fun. Though it seems to offer little in terms of replay value as every game feels roughly the same unless you have a completely new group. Something to experience once per group you have and then move on. That said, very interesting game.

Ugh, this is a game I hate to love. It has a quaint idea of cooperation but the shear beating it throws at players is insulting. Maybe our group is just god-awful at playing the system but we go into Dead Men Tell No Tells expecting to lose. Combat is a dice roll, movement is hyper limited as fatigue cripples you, and everything else just amounts to you losing one way or another. Over run by deckhands? Lose. Too many explosions? Lose. Treasures blow up? Lose. Small chance you only have one exit because of the random tiles drawn but that one path that gets you back to the entrance/exit is blown up? LOSE! But it's damn good fun. The actions are simple. Items are simple. The goal is simple. I really hate to love this game but I end up playing whenever suggested.

It's not exactly a bad game, but it's also not really doing anything new or novel. I like that there is some sense of exploration, but the things you find are all pretty samey. It's pretty much a standard, abstract euro co-op in less than an hour. If you really like that sort of thing, have fun. It's got a pirate theme (yay), but it also has a couple of strangely designed rules as well slightly awkward bookkeeping like most kickstarter games (boo).
