Adds even more complexity and options. I've seen it played once and didn't think it was at all necessary. Perhaps it's worthwhile for folks that have already overcome the understanding mastery of the initial strategies.

Not really a must have, but the High Priests do change everyone's tactics from the moment they are available. I'd even go so far to say that I'd never play Opener without High Priests.
Desaix
An extra mechanism/option to the game. It makes for a more open game lessening the constraints. It also adds power to the game with one extra cultists and slows down the play a bit with the option off having players to be able to "come back" in the turn.
