Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

Overall, it works and I would say worth trying if you need a new euro. For me, it felt bloated with too many mechanics, none of which made the game particularly new or interesting. The theme isn't for me.

I won the only game I played of Crystal Palace. I have to say that while Concordia gets bashed for not having a theme... it's actually games like these that make euros feel dry. It's a convoluted system for convolution's sake. Very few ties to the theme, which was barely interesting for me anyway. I found it fun to play but we all felt it overstayed its welcome for what it was (we played it with a full compliment). Even the owner of the game had very lukewarm feelings for what it was. I think that if one's going to learn a moderately complex game, it has to have a theme that ties with what you're doing, that makes you care for whatever cubes you're converting or loans you're taking. Crystal Palace did none of those things for me, and while it's an engine game that had interesting decisions, I think it just falls into the category of "meh, ok". I can't see a world where I'd like to play this over many, many other boardgames
