Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

This game is as close as you can get to the real thing. Think Football Manager, FIFA or PES as a board game. As the manager you are responsible for assembling your team (through a random draft) and then organising their talents to defeat your opponent. You then play every move on the pitch and your players are responsible for the outcomes based on their individual skills. The core rules are simple enough for anyone with a passion for football and turn based board game mechanics to pick up - there may be a challenge for those not totally enamoured with football and the gameplay may seem slow. To a football fan however, and one interested in tactics, the game moves at a perfect pace. It's a bit like football chess - you're out thinking your opponent and planning your next moves while they play theirs. The advanced rules take the game to the next level and introduce more dice roll modifiers that'll leave you cheering if they go your way or holding your head in your hands when it goes against you. That's the fun thing about Counter Attack and what makes it just like a real football match experience - you can do everything possible to set your team up but if the dice is "against" you then you've got an uphill battle. There are possibilities for solo play scenarios to get to grips with the rules, over 130 extra teams to purchase if you want to add variety and play with your own team's colours and a over 200 player cards so you'll never get the same team twice. You can feel the effort and love put in by the creators and they are always willing to answer questions from the players in their community groups and online forums. If you've read and enjoyed books such as "Inverting the Pyramid" this is the game for you. A must have for any serious football fan - a real table top football simulator.

Feb 2022: Rating 6 - the game is growing on me but doing this for 90mins is not happening. I’d rather watch an actual match. I’m playing shorter games.

Pretty new to BGG so kinda still calibrating my ratings. Played CA a couple of times only but very bemused by the ratings here. It’s Ok at best as mind numbingly slow and laborious to play with no excitement, unless you like throwing dice and checking cards all day long. Certainly does not capture anything like the spirit of a football match for me. Will play if nothing else is on offer. In the meantime The World Cup game is a more rewarding way to burn a few football hours.
