Codex: Card-Time Strategy – Core Set
45m - 45m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 13+
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Only play the basic version, Bashing and Finesse heroes, online. Really decent, lots of varieties with only a few sets of cards. Although I don't feel the secretly-two-card-adding mechanic is that great, it still works well enough. In general, the game of Codex is similar to that of a typical LCG or CCG, sharing some common problem of this type(deep learning curve, static playing style .etc ), but it accomplishes basically the same thing with fewer cards and simpler rules.

As of this review, I have not played a 1v1 card game as compelling, balanced and fun as this. It borrows elements from a variety of other games, but ties all those discrete mechanisms together expertly. This game keeps revealing its depth, and the sheer joy of combining card effects into a fantastic combo is unparalleled.

With Starter Set, Flagstone Dominion vs. Blackhand Scourge, and Whitestar Order vs. Vortoss Conclave. The Purge Eye is on this one.
