In-game money is bet on different commodities in hope that that particular commodity will become the most valuable as the game progresses. Often the values of the commodities are continually changing throughout the game, and the players buy and sell the commodities to make money off of their investment.

Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration.Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Terra Mystica lite? The more I think about it, possibly an improvement on the original? Perhaps Gaia Project and Clans make Terra Mystica obsolete, along different spectrums of the complexity scale.

This is a fun game; the market is neat; and the dance of territory control + money management is satisfying enough, but it's also not particularly different from game to game. The Clans literally save this game and keep it fresh! But there's not terribly many clans that really stir up the basic gameplay. Caledonia a really good game. It creates a cool economic system strapped onto some cast off bits from Terra Mystica, but it also sacrifices some the creative "oomph" in playing a totally different race every game in Terra Mystica for playing mostly the same game every time with slight differences due to your clan benefit. The ports add some tension and variability as well, but they also script the game somewhat. You REALLY want to get on at least one or two ports to shoot for the win usually, and yet they don't feel all that cool to use. They give you a small one-time benefit, but they're really important for maximizing efficiency. I really like this game, but I wish it took some bolder strokes with the variable elements to really bring it to a new level.
