Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Preliminary rating: Very impressed with how this game abstracts many core Civ concepts. Fitting a complete Civ experience in 90 minutes is just clever.

I like the mechanics. It's much better and faster than previous FFG Civ. The only issue - is the PvP battles. In one turn one player can conquest up to 3 cities without any serious problems. Many bonuses to attack and almost nothing for defend. Everything was excellent before this point. But in one moment one of my opponent got 2 of my cities and in the next turn I've got 2 cities from two different players. It so easy to do such huge game changes without any serious consequences for the attacker.

Feels a lot like Scythe, as games that seem like high interaction games but are primarily efficiency puzzles. The card system here is great, and I really like the race to 3 goals that creates a clear and satisfying ending, though that does create turn order imbalance. I didn't particularly like the combat - it's largely abstracted out and a minor part of the game, and yet it's fiddly and unintuituve, such that we had the rule book open to the combat page all game. Pure dice roll resolution is also not my favorite combat mechanism.
