Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Played a three player game tonight. It was brisk, easy to teach and we loved not knowing when the game was going to end. The number of tiles and the large number of gears means lots of variation. We really liked it.

The components are very good. Even the retail version. The game is a bit fiddly as you have to flip over tiles in the middle of the board. Area control with some randomness of pulling cogs. Definitely a little mean as well. The main problem is the cog development powers are very swingy and the game can end quite abruptly. So, you can get beat down and really do nothing wrong.

Quick learning, fast play, beautiful KS version, with some nice mecanisms making him "unique" enough to justify its place on the shelves. However, the end of game might be brutal and the luck plays a (too) strong part (mainly when you draw gears).
