Co-operative play encourages or requires players to work together to beat the game.
Cooperative Play
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Fascinating setting with unique artwork (if only it were on the player cards!). Card management is very simple and that's a good thing. Each character comes with 3 scenarios (1 competitive, 1 coop, and 1 solo), so the game has lots of variety and replayability. The unsleevable hexagonal monster/event cards were an odd choice, but forgivable. Despite everything this game has going for it, there's just something missing. Perhaps I would have rated it higher if it focused more on cooperative / solo play rather than trying to be a jack of all trades.

Rating after 3 solo plays. From a solo standpoint, CoH is truly a great game. Each champion have a personal scenario, with very different objectives, and the strategy must be personalized in order to succeed. The difficulty is pretty high, but I'm always close to winning. I love the art, and the shifting world mechanism, it add a nice twist to the adventure. Plus for solo players, there are amazing solo variants that add so much variability. I recommend it highly !!

Update: I think I miss this game, but only want it if I get the entire bundle with extras and expansion. Not a bad game at all, and one that was enjoyable to play. With that said, this reminds me a lot of the sand box game Star Wars Outer Rim. Seeing that this gives me the same feel and plays similarly, I would always choose Star Wars over this and thus this must go. Really no room for 2 sandbox games in a collection I am trying to pare down. Honestly though, this is a solid game. If you think you would enjoy the world this is in, enjoy playing sandbox games or don't own one yet, this is a great one to try. Not hard to grasp how to play and production is great.
