The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

So I am very pleased with the stand alone game. The main criticism is that when unboxing it certainly seems like almost half the components are for the other variations.

This is exactly as advertised and reviewed - quick to the table, turns move by fast, satisfying, great components. Has the feel of Splendor, though personally I prefer Splendor to this, but not by much. Got this hoping it would click with my wife who prefers quick straightforward games - usually involving cards - she will always be up for Lost Cities, for example. I tried Machi Koro 2 with her and neither of us thought it was a repeat game for us - didn't find the decisions interesting enough. So I'm moving that on. Unfortunately, this game did not make its mark with her - not sure why. Something about there not being enough "get more gems" cards. If there were a few more of those, she might find this more immediately satisfying. But, I greatly enjoyed it and will definitely keep this one. Maybe she'll change her mind! In any event, I can see breaking this out with my social circle, who are still very new to board games - this is a nice "next step" game for my 6 Nimmt-type crowd...
