Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

2019-04-15 : First play. Very thematic engine builder where it pays to have a long-term plan, where you can set priorities as to how you'll specialize and where you can work towards intermediate goals as well. What I found a bit disturbing was the colors of the rondel, the map and the tiles not exactly matching, resulting in less usability and more looking and hunting around on the map. Why this isn't an "8" is because the theme doesn't do it for me - clearly a case of "it's not the game, it's me"

Quite a good Euro game, although the theme does absolutely nothing for me personally. I enjoy claiming the athletes while trying to navigate both training in certain skills and making sure you can travel to the festivals. The two-player game is not great, since scoring does not incentivize players to compete together in festivals. I also agree with rahdo that the turn order/refresh mechanic imbalances the game: we just pass the first player marker whenever we refill the board and it seems to work out fine.

I really like the pyramid-building and the scoring system, but the fact that you could plan your whole game perfectly, especially when mixed with the limited movement, made this game much, much heavier than I would have liked. Still, I'm quite interested in trying it again.
