Carson City: The Card Game
30m - 45m
1 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

I am normally not a big fan of "nothing but auction" games (in this case, 18 auctions in a row), and I am also not crazy about dummy players, but I find this to be an exception. I like how you know which cards the dummy players will take first (in a 2 or 3-pp. game), which puts some pressure on you to up your bid. I also enjoy the challenge of placing cards in your city and maximizing use of characters. The one thing I'm not crazy about is the dummy scoring, which is fine for a solo game (which is supposed to present a personal challenge), but it's really unsatisfying for all players to lose to a dummy player in a competitive multiplayer situation. From now on, I think we'll play without scoring the dummy player(s) during the endgame. And I really don't care how rahdo feels about that.

I've always heard great things about Carson City, but I didn't think that was something I could easily get to the table, nor did I want to pay so much for it. So, I thought I'd try this. The components are sufficient, just a few stacks of cards. The graphic design is simple but effective. The rulebook is quite small and could be a little more detailed. I know they are trying to get everything to fit inside the smaller box. The game works well for what it is. Even the solo mode is enjoyable. In the end, it leaves me wanting a little bit more. The end game scoring actually takes longer than expected as there is a lot to add up.

Not as difficult and definitely much faster than the boardgame. Nice auction mechanism and lots of ways to score points when building your city. I enjoyed my plays so far.
