Carson City: The Card Game
30m - 45m
1 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Solid mix of blind bidding with tableau/city building. I do not find this as much fun as Carson City but I do like how it plays quickly and offers a sufficiently different experience.

Creating your town and figuring out when to go for what you want are fun choices. Succeeds at what the name suggests but not a replacement for the original.

While I suppose I could be talked into playing again, I just really didn't see anything here that was all that interesting. The game play is simple, flip some cards to auction off, and do a simultaneous blind bid from your hand of 9 bidding cards. You can either win character cards, which score in various ways or allow you to do certain things, or town cards, which you want to configure in certain ways to best score points. It all works just fine, but just never felt fun or interesting. Granted, the strategy I got into involved winning lots of characters, which made it feel like I wasn't really playing the game, as playing town cards if probably more interesting. In the end, I won doing this, but it seemed odd winning without really building a town (my town contained 4 cards at the end of the game). But, it didn't seem very interesting regardless. Then, the game ends, and the scoring feels like work to count up. I'm liking games less and less that have a billion ways to score points, which all needed to be counted and added up, and this one has a ton of that. if the game was super fun, I could live with it, but it felt like punishment at the end of what was otherwise a pretty bland experience. Overall, there's nothing really "wrong" with the game. I even like other games where you bid for tiles and create a map out of them, like Isle of Skye or Honshu. This one just didn't come together in a way that felt fun.
